Initial Reactor Operator and Senior Reactor Operator Licensing Examinations of Diablo Canyon Power Plant Units 1 and 2.
During the period Hay 21-28, 1993, the NRC administered initial operator licensing examinations to five Reactor Operators (ROs) and six Senior Reactor Operator (SROs) who had applied for licenses to operate your Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant Units 1 and 2.
As a result of these examinations, five SROs and five ROs met the minimum qualification requirements for licensing.
One SRO candidate failed the written portion of the examination.
After the examinations on Hay 28, 1993, the preliminary findings were discussed with members of your staff as detailed in Examination Report, 50-275/OL-93-01 (Enclosure 1).
The NRC examiner and the contr act examiners noted that the Diablo Canyon training staff provided high quality technical support during the validation of the examination material.
During the subsequent review of the written examinations, the examiners identified two areas of generic weaknesses.
These identified weaknesses were in the area of mitigation of core damage and in the administrative knowledge of facility requirements.
We encourage your staff to ensure these weaknesses are remedied and are not widespread.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of this letter and the enclosures wi 11 be placed in the NRC's Public Document Room.
