PACIFIC GAS AND ELECTRIC COMPANY (Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, Units 1 and 2)

Docket Nos.

50-275 OL and 50-323 OL (Sei'smic)'

'ear Mr. Olmstead:

The Board. asked me to bring to your attention that it has received a copy of a letter dated November 12, 1980 from the Advisory Committee 'on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) to Chair-man John F. Ahearne.

This letter discusses studies made by Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PGGE) on the possible ad-verse interactions of nonsafety systems on plant safety as the result of an earthquake at its Diablo Canyon plant.

The ACRS "letter notes that while the PGGE studies were "very thorough" and "suitable for the task" the work is not yet completed and therefore the staff has not reviewed the final results.

A copy of the ACRS letter is attached.

The Board wishes to be informed of.the present status of the applicant's study and when the remaining investigations will be completed and reviewed by the staff.

The Board also wishes to be advised of the relevance of these ongoing studies to the issues now before it.

The Board. would appreciate re-ce'iving the staff's response no later than December 15, 1980.

Any other party desiring to comment on that response should do so by December 31, 1980.
