APPROVAL OF ASME SECTION XI CODE CASES FOR CATAWBA, MCGUIRE, AND OCONEE NUCLEAR STATIONS (TAC NOS. 67629/67630/67631/67632 67633/67634/67635)
In a March 2, 1988, letter and pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3), you requested approval to use ASME Code Cases N-401, N-416, N-426, and N-427 in the inservice inspection programs for the Catawba, McGuire, and Oconee Nuclear Stations.
Subsequent to your submittal 10 CFR 50.55a was amended. The May 5, 1988, amendment changes footnote 6 of 10 CFR 50.55a to reference Regulatory Guide (RG) 1.147, "Inservice Inspection Code Case Acceptability ASME Section XI."
The latest revision (revision 6) of RG 1.147 was published in May 1988 and lists Code Cases that may be used by licensees without applying to the NRC for prior approval. Code Cases N-401, N-416, and N-426 were endorsed in revision 6 of RG 1.147 without qualifications. On the basis of our generic actions to date, we find your use of these three Code Cases acceptable.
Code Case N-427 contains qualifications and conditions. Thus, Code Case N-427 is acceptable for use subject to the conditions described in RG 1.147. We would like to emphasize that ASME Section III Code Cases that the Owner intends to use during repair or replacements must be endorsed in the latest revision of RG 1.84 or RG 1.85. The use of other Code Cases may be authorized upon request pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3).
