Regulatory Guide Periodic Review Regulatory Guide Number: 1.216, Revision 0

Title:

Containment Structural Integrity Evaluation for Internal Pressure Loading Above Design-Basis Pressure Office/division/branch: RES/DE/SGSEB Technical Lead: Thomas Herrity Staff Action Decided: Reviewed with no technical issues identified

1. What are the known technical or regulatory issues with the current version of the Regulatory Guide (RG)?

Regulatory Guide 1.216, Revision 0, Containment Structural Integrity Evaluation for Internal Pressure Loading Above Design-Basis Pressure, issued in August 2010, describes methods of predicting internal pressure capacity of containment structures for use in evaluating loading above design pressure, that are acceptable to NRC for demonstrating compliance with 10CFR 52.47(a)(9) and 10CFR 50.44(c)(5). The RG also describes acceptable methods to demonstrate meeting performance goals as described in SECY 90-016 and SECY 93-087 and in section 3.8.1 Concrete Containment, and 3.8.2 Steel Containment: of NUREG-0800 that detail load combinations. No technical or regulatory issues were identified.

2. What is the impact on internal and external stakeholders of not updating the RG for the known issues, in terms of anticipated numbers of licensing and inspection activities over the next several years?

As no technical or regulatory issues were identified, there is no impact to internal or external stakeholders resulting from these activities.

3. What is an estimate of the level of effort needed to address identified issues in terms of full-time equivalent (FTE) and contractor resources?

As no technical or regulatory issues were identified, no resources are required.

4. Based on the answers to the questions above, what is the staff action for this guide (Reviewed with no issues identified, Reviewed with issues identified for future consideration, Revise, or Withdraw)?

Reviewed with no issues identified.

5. Provide a conceptual plan and timeframe to address the issues identified during the review.

No issues were identified during the review.
