SUBJECT:

MODIFICATION OF THE OCONEE ANTICIPATED TRANSIENT WITHOUT SCRAM (ATWS) DESIGN

Dear Mr. Hampton:

In a letter dated April 4, 1995, you informed us of an inadvertent material change in the design description of the Oconee ATWS Mitigation Systems Actuation Circuitry. The change resulted from the replacement of pressure switches in the Anticipatory Reactor Trip System (ARTS), such that the ARTS and the ATWS pressure switches were made by the same manufacturer. Your Final Design Description and our Safety Evaluation Report both stated that the sensors used for the~ATWS systems were from diverse manufacturers.

As stated in your letter, we did not require the ATWS system sensors to be of diverse manufacture from the ARTS. -Therefore, your design for the ATWS system continues to be acceptable. If you have any questions regarding this matter, contact me at (301) 415-1495.
