Site  : SALEM Emergency Class  : NON EMERGENCY "At approximately 0930 [EST] on November 21 , 2014, a live sturgeon was reported being removed from the Salem Unit 1 Circulating Water System (CWS) intake trash racks at the Salem Generating Station. The sturgeon was confirmed by a site biological expert to be a Shortnose Sturgeon, which is an 'endangered' species. Shortnose sturgeons are federally listed as

'endangered' species under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended. Nuclear Environmental Affairs has made a determination that this is a 4 hr. report to the NRC under RAL 11.8.2.a. A report was made to the National Marine Fisheries Service and NJDEP Division of Fish & Wildlife, concerning the Shortnose sturgeon at 1051 by Environmental Licensing.

"The sturgeon was released back into the river at approximately 1016."

The licensee will be notifying Lower Alloways Creek Township, the State of New Jersey (both the Department of Environmental Protection and the Bureau of Nuclear Engineering) and the NRC Resident Inspector.

Notified R1DO (Jackson) and the Endangered Species Resource via email.
