RESPONSE TO THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON REACTOR SAFEGUARDS REPORT ON THE SAFETY ASPECTS OF THE LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION FOR THE CALLAWAY PLANT

Dear Mr. Stetkar:

During the 618th meeting of the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (the Committee) held on October 2-4, 2014, the Committee completed its review of the Callaway Nuclear Power Plant license renewal application. The Committee also reviewed the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staffs associated final safety evaluation report for the Callaway application.

In the Committees final report dated October 14, 2014, the Committee recommends the NRC renew the Callaway operating license. The NRC staff appreciates the Committees insights, review of the license renewal application, and review of the staffs associated final safety evaluation report. In particular, the NRC staff found the Committees insights on the following issues to be helpful:

Reviewing the changes in scoping and screening of structures, systems, and components due to implementing an NFPA-805-based fire protection program; Resolving the multiple instances involving stuck or damaged reactor vessel head closure studs and associated flange threads; Ensuring adequate aging management of reactor vessel internals components in response to the materials reliability program initiatives; and Managing the effects of the reactor coolant system environment on fatigue life of susceptible piping and components.

The NRC staff recognizes the Committees commitment to safety and appreciates its continued support of the license renewal process.

Sincerely,

/RA Michael R. Johnson Acting for/
