UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 November 4, 2014 Mr. Fadi Diya Senior Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer Ameren Missouri Callaway Energy Center P.O. Box 620 Fulton, MO 65251

SUBJECT:

NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY OF THE FINAL PLANT-SPECIFIC SUPPLEMENT 51 TO THE GENERIC ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT FOR LICENSE RENEWAL OF NUCLEAR PLANTS REGARDING CALLAWAY PLANT, UNIT 1

Dear Mr. Diya:

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has completed the final plant-specific Supplement 51 to NUREG-1437, Generic Environmental Impact Statement for License Renewal of Nuclear Plants (GEIS), regarding the renewal of Operating License NPF-30 for an additional 20 years of operation for the Callaway Plant, Unit 1 (Callaway). The notice advises the public that the final supplement is publicly available at the NRC public document room or from the NRCs Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS), and can be found at Accession No. ML14252A643. ADAMS is accessible from the NRC website at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html. The accession number for the final Supplement 51 to the GEIS is ML14289A140. In addition, Callaway County Public Library, 710 Court Street, Fulton, Missouri, 65251, has agreed to make the final supplement available for public inspection.

As discussed in Section 9.4 of the final supplement, the staff determined that the adverse environmental impacts of license renewal for Callaway, Unit 1 are not so great that preserving the option of license renewal for energy-planning decisionmakers would be unreasonable. This recommendation is based on: (1) the analysis and findings in the GEIS; (2) information provided in the environmental report and other documents submitted by Ameren; (3) consultation with Federal, state, local, and Tribal agencies; (4) the NRC staffs independent environmental review; and (5) consideration of public comments received during the scoping process and on the draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement.

F. Diya A separate Notice of Availability of the final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement will be placed in the Federal Register through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact the NRC environmental project manager, Mr. Tam Tran at (301) 415-3617 or by e-mail at tam.tran@nrc.gov.

Sincerely,

/RA/
