SUBJECT:

OCONEE NUCLEAR STATION, UNIT 2 - REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING THE 2013 STEAM GENERATOR TUBE INSPECTIONS (TAC NO. MF3613, DOCKET NO. 50-270)

Chris, By letter dated March 3, 2014, (Agencywide Documents Access and Management Systems Accession No. ML14066A100), Duke Energy Carolinas, LLC (the licensee), submitted the results of the steam generator tube inspections done in 2013 for Oconee Nuclear Station (ONS), Unit 2. The report was submitted in accordance with ONS Technical Specification (TS) 5.6.8.

The NRC staff has reviewed the information submitted by the licensee, and determined that the following information is required to complete our evaluation. The questions are found below. In discussions with your staff on August 20, 2014, I asked that Duke provide a response to this request for additional information within 30 days of the date of this email. Please contact me if you cannot provide your response by that date.

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

1. Please provide the locations (SG, row, and column) of all tubes that were plugged during the outage.
2. In your SG Inservice Inspection Report, you indicated that there were no abnormal conditions detected in the plug visual inspections. Please confirm that no degradation was detected in these inspections or if degradation was detected, please discuss the results of the inspection.
3. In your SG Inservice Inspection Report, you indicated that there were no abnormal conditions from the secondary side inspections at the tube support plates (TSPs). Please confirm that no degradation was detected in these inspections or if degradation was detected, please discuss the results of the inspection.
4. Please clarify the number of indications and tubes with TSP wear and tube-to-tube wear. Please discuss any trends in the number and growth rates of TSP and tube-to-tube wear indications. Has the tube-to-tube wear been present since the first inservice inspection? Also, please discuss whether the severity of the TSP and tube-to-tube wear indications have been bounded by your Operational Assessment projections.

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this request.

Sincerely, Randy Hall, Senior Project Manager 1
