October 1, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTTFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUA OCCURRENCE PNO-II/79-4 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by l staff as of this date FACILITY:

SUBJECT:
REACTOR COOLANT PIPE LAGGING. FIRE At 8:00 a.m.
on September 30, during power operation at 50 percent power, a fire detector alarmed in a Reactor Coolant Pump Bay.
A containment entry revealed a lagging fire on the cold leg piping.
The fire was eitinguished and the unit shut down for Cleanup of lubricating oil in the bay.- The cause of the fire was
-a lubricating oil leak which was blown onto the lagging by the ventilation supply system.
The bay was cleaned and theother two reactor coolant pump bays checked for similar problems. None were found.
The unit was returned to service at 2:00 a.m. on October 1.
MIedia interest is not anticipated.
Neither the NRC nor the licensee plans to ssue a press release.
The State of South Carolina has been informed.
Region TI (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from icensee at 4:30 p.m. on September 30.
