Re: copy of DOE inventory for SCE (SONGS)

Gene-The delay was due to a lack of clarity in your request. The information you are requesting is contained in an every 10 year report to DOE, not an annual report. Additionally, we had to confirm that there are not safeguards or other restrictions on providing the data.

The data are ready. The file is too large to email. Tom has it on a flash drive for you. He can meet you on Friday to give it to you, if that works.

To: Senator Boxer NRC Chairperson MacFarlane, I am writing to you both to ask for your help in getting a copy of SCE (SONGS) 2013 DOE inventory report on spent fuel rods. I have now asked SCE twice for this information. Once face to face at a meeting with Chris Thompson SCE VP of Decommissioning and Tom Palmisano SCE VP & Chief Nuclear Officer on May 2, 2014.

Second on May 7, 2014 in a email to both of them. As of today 5/14/14 I have not received the needed information to present at our next SCE/CEP meeting May 22.

As a Community Engagement Panel (CEP) member on the decommissioning of San Onofre (SONGS) selected by SCE this information is needed to have Dr. Marvin Resnikoff check calculations that Areva has given to SCE on their new 32 system dry cask that SCE is considering using at SONGS.

Below you will see a copy of a email reply from me to Chris Thompson telling him why I would like to see a copy of the 2013 DOE report on spent fuel at SONGS. There has been no reply to this email request.

Your help in this matter would be greatly appreciated to help us all in SoCal do the best job humanly possible of decommissioning San Onofre (SONGS).

Sincerely, Gene Stone 1

Chris, I am happy to tell you why I would like to see this and how it is related to decommissioning.
1. As a CEP member I am interested in knowing if SCE complied with DOE request.
2. With this information, assuming it is the same information SCE gave to Areva? I would like to have Marvin Resinkoff run the numbers to do the cooling and heat load calculations. To do that accurately we will need each assembly ID, burnup, uranium enrichment, date moved to the pools, whether fuel us damaged, and cladding material.

(if you won't share the DOE report you could give us the same info you gave Areva to do their cooling calculations)

It is clear now that SCE will use the 32 cask system now that the notification by NRC on May 1 was released that the 32 dry cask has been approved on April 18 or 23. Quite the coincidence that the NRC announcement about this happened the day before our event.

As this is a open and transparent decommissioning having someone with Marvin's credentials check the figures Areva is giving SCE seems only prudent considering the severe damage to SoCal that could be done if Areva figures are wrong.
