Potassium Iodide needs for California

Scott A. Morris Deputy Director, Division of Preparedness and Response US NRC, Office of Nuclear Security and Response

Dear Mr. Morris

Thank you for the letter to Moustafa Abou-Taleb dated April 18, 2014, subject: Future need for Potassium Iodide Tablets.

The State concurs with your assessment of no radioiodine threat remaining at the SONGS site. With no radioiodine threat, there is no longer a need for potassium iodide (KI) tablets as a supplemental protective action in the event of an accident.

On May 7, 2014 the Interjurisdictional Planning Committee voted to not participate in the NRC replenishment of KI. Therefore we are rescinding our request for the NRC provided KI tablets for the jurisdictions surrounding the SONGS site.

We still require replenishment of the NRC provided KI at our Diablo Canyon site. Our current request for San Luis Obispo County remains valid.

Please contact Mr. Abou-Taleb or me if you have any question regarding this issue. Thank you.

Future Need for Potassium Iodide Tablets In California

Dear Mr. Abou-Taleb:

Last week I signed a letter to you regarding your future needs for potassium iodide (KI) tablets in the State of California, particularly for the communities within the emergency planning zone around the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. A copy of the letter is attached to this email and as of today is publically available in the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's document management system.

While a hard copy of the attached letter is in the U.S. mail to you, I wanted to reach out to you directly to ensure that you were aware of it and to answer any questions that you may have about its content. Please feel free to give me, Robert Lewis, or Patricia Milligan a call at 301-287-3779.
