San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station 2013 Annual Turtle Incidental Take Report
Reference:
National Marine Fisheries Service Biological Opinion for Sea Turtles Dated 9/18/06
Dear Ms. Wilkin:
In accordance with the reference above, the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) is submitting this annual report on incidental takes of sea turtles for the year 2013. One Green Sea Turtle was entrained during 2013 at SONGS (see attached stranding report). The turtle was released alive and unharmed at Churches Beach. Visual inspections on the previous shift 5/5/13, showed no evidence of turtles in the circulating water systems of the applicable unit. Routine monthly offshore surveys conducted offshore of SONGS in the vicinity of the Units 2 and 3 intakes did not note any sea turtles in the vicinity of the plant intakes. Both plants currently have velocity caps which significantly minimize the potential for the entrainment of sea turtles into the Units 2 and 3 circulating water intakes, along with reduce water flow based on the shutdown of the Units 2 and 3 circulating water system following the announcement by Southern California Edison to decommission SONGS 2 and 3.
If you have any questions, please contact myself at (949) 368-6375
