September 13, 1982 Docket No. 50-206 LICENSEE: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON COMPANY FACILITY: SAN ONOFRE NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNIT NO. 1

SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF SEPTEMBER 8, 1982 MEETING On September 8, 1982, members of the NRC staff met with representatives of Southern California Edison Company. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the licensee's proposed modificatdons to the San Onofre Unit No. 1 safety injection system. Enclosure 1 is a list of attendees.

On September 3, 1981, neither of the safety injection system valves, located in the discharge of both trains of the safety injection pumps, opened as required. The licensee has taken interim measures, including augmented surveillance, to assure that the valves are operable. The licensee also is considering two alternative long-term solutions. The first alternative is to order new replacement valves; the second alter native is to modify the system by adding new dedicated feedwater pumps and making the safety injection system completely independent of the feedwater system.

The licensee has decided to pursue the second alternative. Both the current and proposed modified systems are shown in the enclosed handouts (Enclosure 2).

The licensee intends to make a f'Ormal submittal documenting the proposed modification.
