MANAGER, GENERATION ENGINEERING July 6, 1979 213-572-1401 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attention:

Mr. D. L. Ziemann Operating Reactors Branch #2 Division of Operating Reactors U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

20555 71 Gentlemen:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-206 Small Break LOCA Analysis San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 1 The purpose of this letter is to document a telephone conversation on June.26, 1979 between Mr. N. Villalva of your staff and Mr. J. Rainsberry of Southern California Edison Company. As you are aware, Westinghouse Electric Corporation is currently performing generic small break LOCA analyses for an owners group of Westinghouse utilities. These analyses are in response to Mr. D. F. Ross's letter of June 4, 1979 to Mr. T. M. Anderson.

Our Company is participating in the owners group activities.

The purpose of the call to Mr. Villalva was to inform him that, based on conversations with Westinghouse, it is our understanding that the general system behavior as discussed in the generic analyses is applicable to all Westinghouse operating plants including San Onofre Unit 1, but that results of specific scenario analyses may not be directly applicable to San Onofre Unit 1. In view of this, we have asked Westinghouse to take a more detailed look at the San Onofre Unit 1 design with respect to the results of the generic analyses. As indicated to Mr. Villalva, based on the results of this plant specific examination, we will be able to more specifically address the applicability of the generic analyses to San Onofre Unit 1. Due to the fact that the Westinghouse efforts have so far been devoted entirely to the generic analyses, we do not expect them to complete the examination of our plant for about two weeks. At that time, we will contact your Staff to further discuss this matter.

If you have any questions on the above please contact me.

Very truly yours, 7907 10 0 6; 1
