Subject:

Response to NRC Bulletin 88-04 Potential Safety-Related Pump Loss Docket No. 50-206 San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 This letter-is to inform you that in order to respond to your July 17, 1990 letter regarding Bulletin 88-04, we will need more time than allowed by your requested date of September 1, 1990. We have reviewed the bulletin and the issues identified in the enclosure to your letter. Based on that review we have decided to submit a revised response addressing the entire bulletin including the issues identified in your recent letter.

In an August 14, 1990 telephone discussion with members of your staff, we received clarifications on your position regarding the performance of pump miniflow testing. We are in contact with our safety-related pump vendors and are pursuing several options with them in support of performing pump miniflow testing. Additional time to consult with our pump vendors is needed to assess your recommendations regarding pump miniflow testing. By September 14, 1990 we will provide you with a more detailed plan and schedule for our revised response to Bulletin 88-04.

If you haveany questions, please contact me.

Very truly yours, 9008300200 900824 PDR ADOCK o5000206 0
