Southern Calfornia Edison Company 23 PARKER STREET IRVINE, CALIFORNIA 92718 December 17., 1990 F. R. NANDY TELEPHONE MANAGER. NUCLEAR LICENSING (714) 454-4504 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attention:

Document Control Desk Washington, D. C. 20555 Gentlemen:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-206 Auxiliary Feedwater System Surveillance Testing San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 Your letter dated November 15, 1990, issuing Amendment No. 138, requested that we submit a schedule to review the Auxiliary Feedwater System (AFWS) technical specifications to determine if an update to the surveillance requirements is appropriate. In accordance with your request, we will conduct a comprehensive review of the technical specifications to determine if any changes are required. If our review indicates the technical specification surveillance requirements should be upgraded or improved, we will submit proposed changes to the technical specifications to you 6 months after return to service from the Cycle 11 refueling outage.

Your November 15, 1990 letter indicated concern that the surveillance requirements for the turbine driven auxiliary feedwater pump may be out of date.

Your letter suggests that additional testing should be conducted on the turbine driven auxiliary feedwater pump in MODE 1 during startup to further demonstrate pump operability. Our detailed review of the Unit 1 technical specification surveillance requirements for the turbine driven auxiliary feedwater pump and a review of the standard technical specifications will include your concerns.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Very truly yours, e
