On January 7, 1988, a reporter of a local daily newspaper, The Oceanside Blade-Tribune, contacted Southern California Edison Company (SCE) regarding an internal investigation.
The investigation resulted from an unsupported assertion, made by a former SCE temporary empoyee, that a mrember of the staff responsible for conducting the drug testing program had conspired with friend~s, working at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), to falsify the results of annual drug tests.
SCE provided basic information on the preliminary results of the investigation in response to the newspaper ' s inquiries, as did NRC Region V.
Subsequently, on January 10, 1988, a ten paragraphi article appeared in the newspaper, quoting information provided by SCE and NRC Region V.
On January 11, 1988, a 10 CFR 73 report to the NRC was made of the news media attention.
SCE had previously received a media inquiry about the investigation in mid-December 1987 fromn a los Angeles, California television station.
At that time, SCE acknowledged that an investigation was underway buit did not provide details about this investigation.
No mention of the investigation was made in news reports by this television station.
No other inquiries were received until the Oceanside Blade-Tribune contacted SCE.
The ongoing investigation has not substantiated the assertion.
