Docket No. 50-206 Steam Generator Overfill Protection System Generic Letter 89-19 San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 1 This letter reschedules our submittal concerning the installation of a steam generator overfill protection system at SONGS 1. This commitment was the result of Generic Letter 89-19 regarding Unresolved Safety Issue A-47, "Safety Implication of Control Systems in LWR Nuclear Power Plants."
Generic Letter 89-19 identified SONGS 1 as one of the plants that do not have the capability to prevent steam generator overfill transients and recommended that a system be installed to prevent such events. However, the generic letter indicated that its recommendations were based on generic data and that licensees could justify not installing a system if plant specific considerations demonstrated it was not warranted.
By our letter dated April 17, 1990, we informed you that we were planning to install an overfill protection system during the Cycle 12 refueling outage unless our evaluation of the need for this system as part of the IPE indicated otherwise. We committed to complete our evaluation by August 31, 1991.
However, our evaluation is requiring a greater effort than originally anticipated. We now expect to complete our evaluation and inform you of its results by November 22, 1991.
