MEDFORD TELEPHONE MANAGER OF December 29, 1988 (818) 302-1749 NUCLEAR REGULATORY AFFAIRS U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attention: Document Control Desk Washington, D.C. 20555 Gentlemen:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-206 Recertification of Charging Pump Motor Rating San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 This letter is in response to your November 22, 1988 letter. As indicated in your letter, we responded to License Condition 3.L(6) regarding the recertification, rewinding or replacement of the charging pump motors by indicating the motors were recertified to 700 hp with a service factor of 1.15. Provided as Enclosure 1 is the Westinghouse report dated September 14, 1988 documenting the evaluation of the charging pump motors.

As indicated in the report, one of the motors (G-8B) was rewound in 1972.

Westinghouse has reviewed the information that is available regarding the rewind and has concluded that the recertification is applicable to the rewound motor.

SCE has addressed the rewind of the motor to support the environmental qualification and continued operation of the charging pump. Provided as is the justification for the continued operation of charging pump G-8B which was rewound. As indicated in the enclosure, some of the data regarding the rewind of the motor was not available. This justification is based on the specification, rewind methods and the materials used at the time of the rewind and is substantiated by a former Westinghouse employee involved in motor rewinds taking place at that location at the time.

This information provides the justification and confidence that the motor can be operated through Cycle 10 to the Cycle 11 refueling outage. At that time, the motor will be rewound or replaced.

With regard to License Condition 3.L(5) regarding the confirmatory load tests of major loads, the tests have been completed. The results are being evaluated and will be provided by January 6, 1989.
