U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attention:

Document Control Desk Washington, D.C.

20555 Gentlemen:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-206 Inservice Inspection Interval San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1

Reference:

Letter dated December 28, 1987, from M. 0. Medford (SCE) to NRC, Inservice Testing Program for Pumps and Valves By the above referenced letter, Southern California Edison submitted the Inservice Testing (IST) program for pumps and valves for San Onofre Unit 1 for the ten year interval that commenced on January 1, 1988. The referenced letter also informed the NRC that the ten year interval for Inservice Inspection (ISI) and for component repair and replacement would be extended beyond January 1, 1988, as permitted by the ASME Code, but that the exact expiration date would be established some time later.

This letter is to inform the NRC that the ten year interval expiration date for ISI and component repair and replacement is calculated to be November 30, 1991.

The forty-seven month extension from the original expiration date of December 31, 1987, takes into account continuous Unit 1 outages from April 9, 1980, to June 17, 1981, and from February 26, 1982, to November 27, 1984.

Because of this extension:

1.

All ASME Code Section XI related repair and replacement work performed on or prior to November 30, 1991, will continue to conform to the 1977 edition of Section XI of the ASME Code, including Addenda through summer of 1978.

2.

All ASME Code Section XI related inspections, examinations-and pressure tests performed on or prior to November 30, 1991, will continue to conform to the 1974 edition of Section XI, including Addenda through summer of 1975. Consistent with SCE's interpretation of the 1974 ASME Code, this date may again be extended by as much as one year to permit inspections to be concurrent with plant outage.

Document Control Desk August 2, 1988 At the end of the inspection intervals specified above, new ASME Code editions and Addenda will be applied, in accordance with 10 CFR 50.55a requirements.
