Document Control Desk Washington, D.C. 20555 Gentlemen:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-206 Inservice Testing Program for Pumps and Valves San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1

References:

A) Letter dated December 28, 1987, from M. 0. Medford (SCE) to the NRC, Inservice Testing Program for Pumps and Valves B) Letter dated November 4, 1987, from M. 0. Medford (SCE) to the NRC, Fifth Edition of the Integrated Implementation Schedule (IIS)

By Reference A, Southern California Edison (SCE) submitted to the NRC a revised Inservice Testing program for pumps and valves for San Onofre Unit 1.

Pump Relief Request (PRR) No. 2 in this revised program specified alternate testing for the four diesel fuel transfer pumps and stated that this alternate testing would commence "by the end of the next refueling outage," which is Cycle X. However, by Reference B, SCE had previously informed the NRC that IST modifications had been rescheduled to Cycle XI.

This letter is to clarify that since alternate testing of the diesel fuel transfer pumps requires hardware modifications, these modifications will be completed and alternate testing will be started by the end of Cycle XI refueling. A revised copy of PRR No. 2 based on this correction is enclosed.

If you have any questions, please call me.

Very truly yours,

Revision 2 (7/88)

PUMP RELIEF REQUEST NO. 2 SYSTEM:

Diesel Fuel Oil - Storage and Supply COMPONENT:

Diesel Fuel Transfer Pumps G-74A, G-74B, G-75A, G-75B CLASS:

3 FUNCTION:

To provide makeup fuel to diesel generator day tank.

TEST REQUIREMENT:

Measure pump bearing vibration and temperature, and observe lubrication level per Article IWP-3000.

BASIS FOR

,RELIEF:

The Diesel Fuel Transfer Pumps are submergence type pumps located inside diesel fuel storage tanks and are not accessible. Therefore, it is not possible to measure bearing vibration or temperature. The pumps are submerged in diesel fuel.

The diesel fuel provides lubrication for the bearings.

ALTERNATE TESTING:

Vibration of the pump motor thrust bearing will be measured and trended on a quarterly basis to provide indirect indication of pump degradation. This activity will commence by the end of the Cycle XI refueling outage.
