Southern California Edison Company P. O. BOX 800 2244 WALNUT GROVE AVENUE ROSEMEAD, CALIFORNIA 91770 M.O.MEDFORD TELEPHONE MANAGER OF NUCLEAR ENGINEERING (818) 302-1749 AND LICENSING May 27, 1988 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attention:

Document Control Desk Washington, D.C. 20555 Gentlemen:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-206 Nuclear Instrumentation System (NIS) Replacement San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1

Reference:

Letter, Kenneth P. Baskin, SCE, to U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Amendment Application No. 150, Nuclear Instrumentation System Replacement, April 15, 1988 The referenced letter provided the details of Southern California Edison's (SCE's) plans to install a replacement NIS at San Onofre Unit 1. The letter indicated that drawings and equipment qualification (EQ) data, would be provided at a later date. Accordingly, the following information is offered.

SCE is having difficulty in getting the necessary documentation to support a 10 CFR 2.790 request for withholding of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation drawings from public disclosure. It is expected that this will be resolved within the next month, such that the drawings can be submitted on the docket.

However, as discussed with Mr. C. M. Trammell, to facilitate NRC staff review of the replacement NIS, the drawings have been made available on an informal basis, until they can be officially submitted on the docket. It is anticipated that they will be formally submitted by June 24, 1988.

The resolution of the EQ testing issues is ongoing. The EQ test program is currently scheduled to be complete and documented in Westinghouse reports by August 17, 1988. Accordingly, by September 16, 1988, SCE will submit a brief description of the scope of EQ testing and the design basis EQ parameters used.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Very truly yours, cc: 3. B. Martin, Regional Administrator, NRC Region V F. R. Huey, NRC Senior Resident Inspector, San Onofre Units 1, 2 and 3 8806090272 880527 PDR ADOCK 05000206 p
