BOX 128 SAN CLEMENTE, CALIFORNIA 92672 H.E.MORGAN TELEPHONE STATION MANAGER (714) 368-6241 October 16, 1985 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Inspection and Enforcement Region V 1450 Maria Lane, Suite 210 Walnut Creek, California 94596-5368 Attention:

Mr. J. B. Martin, Regional Administrator

Dear Sir:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-206 Special Report San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 In accordance with Technical Specification Section 6.9.3 and Table 3.5.10-1, Action Statement 27, of Provisional Operating License No. DPR-13 for San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1, this letter provides the required Special Report for the Plant Vent Stack Wide Range Gas Monitor R-1254 being out of service greater than seven days.

On October 2, 1985, at 0740, with Unit 1 at 93% power, monitor R-1254 was removed from service to perform the routine quarterly surveillance, and a preplanned alternate method of monitoring was initiated as required. On October 7, 1985, the monitor failed during the surveillance test. The failure was intermittent, requiring extensive trouble-shooting, which delayed the return to service of the monitor until October 10, 1985, at 1705.

The monitor was repaired by resoldering connections on a printed circuit card. This is considered an isolated occurrence, and no additional corrective action is planned. Since additional plant vent stack monitors were availablW during the period R-1254 was unavailable, there was no safety significance te' this event. The health and safety of plant personnel or the public was notR affected.
