Subject:

Docket No. 50-206 SEP Topic II-1.C, Offsite Hazards NUREG-0737, Item III.D.3.4, Control Room Habitability San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1

Reference:

Letter, M. 0. Medford, SCE, to 3. A. Zwolinski, NRC, SEP Topic II.l.C, Offsite Hazards, NUREG-0737, Item III.D.3.4, Control Room Habitability, November 14, 1984 The referenced letter provided a risk assessment of the loss of control room habitability for the San Onofre Unit 1 control room. The conclusion of that assessment was that no modifications to the current control room HVAC and habitability systems are cost effective. The referenced letter also stated that we would perform a review of upgrades to the control room HVAC system that can reasonably be implemented in order to enhance the reliability of the control room HVAC. Subsequent discussions with the NRC staff members reviewing the assessment have resulted in the need to provide additional information to support their review of the risk assessment. They also requested that we perform a dose assessment for the control room considering both the present and any proposed configurations. The purpose of this correspondence is to provide a revised risk assessment and a schedule for the submittal of our plans for upgrade of the control room HVAC system.

The enclosed report entitled "Control Room HVAC System Value Impact Assessment, Revision 1," is provided for your review. The report contains as appendices a dose assessment of the present control room HVAC configuration and the responses to the staff questions. The revision to the body of the report addresses our responses to the staff questions. It is anticipated that our plans for upgrade of the control room HVAC will be submitted to you by November 15, 1985.
