Docket No. 50-206 Plans for Long Term Operation San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 As San Onofre Unit 1 now prepares for return-to-service from the current outage, I would like to describe our plans for the future of this unit. Once returned to commercial operation at the end of this outage, the unit will represent an important part of the generating capacity of our company.
San Onofre Unit 1 had a capacity factor of over 70% during the years from the start of commercial operation in January 1968 until the time of the steam generator repair outage in April, 1980. Since that outage we have performed considerable upgrades and repairs including the steam generator sleeving project, TMI modifications, and particularly the seismic upgrade program. The unit now represents what we believe is a reliable generating facility capable of providing service through the end of its expected life.
Based on our current knowledge of electricity demand, the cost of constructing alternate generating facilities, the scope of expected regulatory modifications and the NRC's acceptance of our Integrated Living Schedule, and the cost and availability of alternate power sources, we expect San Onofre Unit 1 to continue to play an important role in meeting our customers' electricity demand. During the current outage, we have successfully completed the majority of the seismic upgrade program and have submitted an application to have the Integrated Living Schedule become a part of our license. The accomplishment of these two goals makes the future expenditures on the unit more predictable and gives us confidence in its continued economic viability.
As you are aware, our Public Utilities Commission has taken a specific interest in Unit 1 and has allowed us to retain the unit in our rate base subject to successful startup from this outage. They have also taken an interest in our Integrated Living Schedule Program and have indicated that they will be evaluating each of our future cycle expenditures as they occur.
In a hearing before the Public Utilities Commission on February 27 of this year, David J. Fogarty, Executive Vice President, of SCE, indicated to the Commission that Unit 1 is expected to be capable of operating through the year 2004.

November 16, 1984 In summary, upon restart from the current outage, we expect San Onofre Unit 1 to represent a reliable contributor to meeting our customers' electricity demand through the end of its expected life.
