Subject:

Docket No. 50-206 Status of Boric Acid System Modifications Eighth Edition of the Integrated Implementation Schedule San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1

Reference:

Letter, F. R. Nandy, SCE, to NRC, dated November 16, 1989 This letter provides supplementary schedule information concerning the Automatic Vent System for the Boric Acid System. This modification is being installed to minimize gas binding that has previously occurred in the system.

The modification installed heat traced minimum flow recirculation lines, continuous vent lines and restrictive flow orifices, intended to limit excess flow during pump starts.

It was indicated in the referenced letter that the Automatic Vent System for the Boric Acid System would complete final testing by November 30, 1989. At the time the test was planned it was expected that the addition of the heat tracing would prevent gas binding in the system. Although the testing was completed as scheduled, and the heat tracing performance was acceptable, the test revealed that additional design work would be required to re-size the flow orifices in the system. As a result, the additional work on this project has been scheduled to be completed during the Cycle XI refueling outage. In the interim, the procedures for the system also have been revised to reduce the potential for gas binding.
