Southern California Edison Company 23 PARKER STREET IRVINE, CALIFORNIA 92718 F. R. NANDY TELEPHONE MANAGER OF NUCLEAR LICENSING November 27, 1989 (714) 5 o7-5400 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attention: Document Control Desk Washington, D. C. 20555 Gentlemen:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-206 Response to Generic Letter 88-14, "Instrument Air Supply System Problems Affecting Safety-Related Equipment" San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 1 The purpose of this letter is to provide a submittal schedule for response to Generic Letter 88-14. As a result of LER 89-024, "Unit 1 CV-517 and CV-518 Failure Mode of Loss of Instrument Air," dated October 16, 1989 and LER 89-025, "Unit 1 CV-305 and FCV-1112 Single Failure Deficiency with Hot Leg Recirculation," dated November 13, 1989, which reported previously unidentified effects resulting from loss of instrument air, we determined that it was necessary to reevaluate the effort on Generic Letter 88-14. We indicated in a letter dated October 31, 1989 that we were in the process of determining the impact of the recent findings and that additional time would be needed to provide our response.

Accordingly, we have initiated additional efforts to reverify the failure modes and effects of the pneumatic components to ensure that any additional deficiencies are identified and addressed. As a result, we anticipate that our response to Generic Letter 88-14 will be provided by January 15, 1990.
