Docket No. 50-206 Seismic Design Considerations San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 By letter dated October 8, 1981, we provided a description of the methodology and criteria used in the Balance of Plant Mechanical Equipment and Piping (BOPMEP) Seismic Reevaluation Program. Provided as an enclosure to this letter are the results of this program.
As discussed in the enclosed report, modifications have been identified to a number of items in the scope of the BOPMEP program. Although the majority of these modifications are required to meet the reevaluation criteria and therefore restore design margins, some of the modifications have been identified as required to ensure structural integrity.
In light of the fact that these evaluations have just recently been completed, we have not had a chance to review in any detail the required modifications nor to develop a schedule for their implementation. Therefore, a schedule for implementation of these modifications, especially the structural integrity items, will be developed and discussed with the NRC staff. We will obtain concurrence from the NRC staff regarding our approach to resolution of these items prior to the end of the current outage.
