D. M. Crutchfield, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 5 Division of Licensing U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

20555 Gentlemen:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-206, SEP Topic:

111-2, Wind and Tornado Loadings III-4.A, Tornado Missiles San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1

References:

A. Letter from R. W. Krieger, SCE, to D. M. Crutchfield, NRC, dated May 4, 1982 B. Letter from Walt Paulson, NRC, to R. Dietch, SCE, dated July 15, 1982 C. Letter from R. W. Krieger, SCE, to D. M. Crutchfield, NRC, dated August 25, 1982 Reference A provided our draft Safety Assessments of the subject SEP topics. Reference B was a request for additional information on specific structures and components. Reference C provided the requested information with the exception of an evaluation of the loading capability of certain components which are exposed to the atmosphere. We indicated that information concerning the capability of these components could be provided by October 4, 1982. The purpose of this letter is to inform you that we will be delaying the evaluation of these components pending the outcome of SEP Topic II-2.A, Severe Weather Phenomena, during the integrated safety assessment for our facility.

As indicated in Reference A, the design basis tornado used in the reevaluation of San Onofre Unit 1 is considered overly conservative.

Selection of an appropriate tornado during the integrated assessment will allow a more definitive and realistic analysis.

If you have any questions on this matter, please contact me.
