SAN ONOFRE NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION SEMI-ANNUAL OPERATING REPORT NO.
23 FOR THE PERIOD INCLUDING JULY 1, 1978 to DECEMBER 31, 1978 SUBMITIED IN ACCORDANCE WITH:
OPERATING LICENSE NO.
DPR-13 Docket#
Control # 770 Date Z-2 of D ociif REGULATORnY 00KCiT FILE /
SUBMITTED BY:
SOUTIHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON COMPANY SAN DIEGO GAS & ELECTRIC COMPANY 7903060450
RADIOACTIVE EFFLUET RELEASES Attached are tables which summarize radioactive releases from the plant.
An independent laboratory performs some of the analyses on monthly composite samples.
As a consequence, the November and December data do not contain strontium 89 or 90 and the total particulate gross alpha values. These data will be included in a future report as they become available.
- 1. Gaseous Effluents a.'Gross Radioactivity Releases (i) Total gross radioactivity releases were 1.81 E+3 curies.
In addition 2.65 E+l curies of tritium were released.
(ii) The maximum gross radioactivity release rate for a one hour period was 1.20 E+4 microcuries/sec.
(iii) Total gross radioactivity data by nuclide released are shown in Table II.
(iv) The percent of the technical specification limit for noble gases is 1.10 E-1 percent.
- b. Iodine Releases (i) Total ioaine radioactivity released during this reporting period was 2.11 E-4 curies of Iodine-131.
(ii) This represents 3.57 E-5 percent of the technical specification limit.
- c. Particulate Releases (i) Particulate radioactivity released during this reporting period was 2.49 E-3 curies.
(ii) Gross alpha releases excluding background radioactivity were less than LLD.
(iii) Total gross radioactivity of nuclides with half lives greater than eight days was 2.49 E-3 curies.
(iv) The percent of the technical specification limit for particulate radioactivity with half lives greater than eight days was 2.57 E-5.
- 2.
Liquid Effluents (a) Total gross radioactivity released, excluding tritium and noble gases, was 1.18 E+1 curies. The average concentration released to unrestricted areas was 6.92 E-8 microcuries/ml.
SEMI-ANNUAL OPERATING REPORT NO.
23 Page 2 (b) The maximum concentration of gross radioactivity released to the unrestricted area was 2.73 E-6 microcuries/ml.
(c) The total tritium released to the unrestricted area was 2.44 E+3 curies. The average tritium concentration released to the unrestricted area was 2.93 E-6 microcuries/ml. Alpha radioactivity released to the unrestricted area was 5.89 E-5 curies. The average alpha concentration was 4.08 E-13 microcuries/ml.
(d) The total dissolved gas radioactivity released to the unre stricted area was 1.46 EO curies. This quantity yielded an average concentration of 2.60 E-8 microcuries/ml released to the unrestricted area.
(e) The volume of liquid waste released was 1.30 E+7 liters.
(f) The total volume of dilution water was 4.76 E+ll liters.
(g) Total gross radioactivity by nuclide is shown in Table I.
(h) The percent of the technical specification limit for liquid releases is 7.61 E-1.
SOLID WASTE (1) Total amount of solid waste shipped was 4.61 E+3 cubic feet.
(2) The total estimated radioactivity involved in the above shipments was 7.17 E-0 curies.
(3) The above solid waste was transported to Beatty, Nevada by Nuclear Engineering Co. for burial. Shipments were made on March 8, June 9, November 2 and November 15, 1978.
(4) In addition to the above waste, 19 spent fuel elements were shipped to General Electric Co., Morris, Illinois, for storage.
ADDITIONS Table I, Liquid Releases, of Semi-Annual Operating Report No. 22 should be updated to include the data shown for gross alpha, SR-89 and SR-90 for May and June.
Table II, Gaseous Releases of Semi-Annual Operating Report No. 22 should be updated to include the data shown for gross alpha for May and June.
