Dear Sir or Madam:

Per the requirements of 10CFR Part 21, Sulzer Bingham Pumps Inc. advises of a defect condition on a Reactor Coolant Pump Seal Housing supplied to Baltimore Gas & Electric Company's Calvert Cliffs Units 1 and 2.

The condition was first observed on Unit 1, Pump 12A upon seal pressurization prior to start-up. The defect is manifested by failure of this seal to stage. This does not constitute total seal failure.

SBPI evaluation has identified the defect as a mis-drilled hole. Visual examination of the remaining four assemblies in Unit 2 will be performed at Calvert Cliffs to assure acceptance. Verification of the other three Unit 1 RCP Seal Housings at Baltimore Gas & Electric has been by proper seal staging and function.

Similar housings are installed at Southern California Edison's San Onofre Units 2 and 3 and showed no signs of deficiency upon start-up in the years past, but an information letter will be sent concurrently with the one going to Baltimore Gas &

Electric.
