By letter dated August 7, 1992, Southern California Edison (SCE) requested schedular relief from certain second ten-year interval Inservice Inspections (ISI's) for San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 1. These inspections are currently required by the Technical Specifications (TS) which referencesSection XI of the ASME Code. Your letter also requested relief from the reporting requirements for the second ten-year interval ISI and included your plans for the third ten-year interval ISI program. The staff has reviewed and evaluated your requests and the supporting information. Based on the information submitted we have concluded that the request to extend the interval for the second ten-year ISI program plan for six months is acceptable and is granted. Your request for relief from the requirement to submit the third ten-year interval ISI program plan is also granted provided shutdown of San Onofre, Unit 1 occurs as presently planned.
Your request not to prepare and submit the Owner's Report for Inservice Inspections, Form NIS-1, is denied. The staff's evaluations and conclusions are presented in the enclosed Safety Evaluation.
Sincerely, original signed by J. Clifford for Theodore R. Quay, Director Project Directorate V 1
