This letter is in response to the NRC Generic Letter 84-01, dated January 5, 1984, on the use of the terms "Important to Safety" and "Safety Related". That letter designated you as the NRC's lead on this issue, and directed that anyone interested in meeting with the NRC to discuss this subject should contact you.

As a member of the Utility Safety Classification Group we support further discussion of this issue with you through the Chairman and Steering Committee of the Group. We believe that this arrangemet will be conducive to establishing the dialogue necessary for achieving resolution. Mr. Bruce Harshe, Chairman of the Utility Safety Classification Group, has sent you a letter dated January 26, 1984 requesting a meeting with you.
