Docket No. 50-206 Spent Fuel Storage Racks San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 In accordance with your request dated July 22, 1983, enclosed are the Bechtel calculations of the seismic adequacy of the spent fuel storage racks in the "as is" condition. These calculations indicate that with the two bent braces the racks in the "fully loaded" condition do not meet the seismic criteria in Section 9.2 of the San Onofre Unit 1 FSA. However, in the "as loaded" condition, the racks do meet this criteria.
It should.be noted that these calculations are considered to be conservative since a number of factors are not included as indicated in the calculations. For example, factors which were not accounted for include the frictional resistance of the floor on the racks, the viscous drag forces of the water, a damping value greater than 7% and the increased load carrying capability of the struts due to actual material strength.
