Southern California Edison Company SAN ONOFRE NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION P.O. BOX 128 SAN CLEMENTE. CALIFORNIA 92672 H. B. RAY TELEPHONE STATION MANAGER September 29, 1983 17141 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Inspection and Enforcement Region V 1450 Maria Lane, Suite 210 Walnut Creek, California 94596-5368 Attention:
Mr. J. B. Martin, Regional Administrator
Dear Sir:
Subject:
Docket No. 50-206 Diesel Generator Inspection San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 1
Reference:
Confirmatory Action Letter, T. W. Bishop (NRC) to H. B. Ray (SCE),
Potential Cracks in Crankshaft of Transamerica Delaval Diesel, dated August 30, 1983 In response to the reference, an inspection of both emergency diesel generators at Unit 1 was performed during the period September 1 -
6, 1983 to determine whether or not cracks might exist in their crankshafts.
The inspection consisted of visual, ultraviolet magnetic particle, and ultrasonic examinations of those portions of both diesel generator crankshafts accessible through the inspection ports. These examinations demonstrated that no cracks exist in the diesel generaor crankshafts.
During the performance of these examinations, a cracked connecting rod bolt washer was discovered on the #5 rod cap nut of the #2 diesel generator.
The cracks in the washer were caused by the washer being inserted upside down during a diesel generator design change performed in the spring of 1982 to replace the spherical washers associated with the bolts which fasten piston crowns to their respective skirts. A new washer was installed and the #2 diesel generator was declared operable on September 12, 1983.
This occurrence is unrelated to any potential crankshaft deficiency noted in the reference.

Mr. J.
September 29, 1983 Although not required by the reference, we intend to disassemble one set of connecting rods in one of the diesel generators for inspection.
This measure will furnish more information on the condition of a normally inaccessible portion of the crankshaft.
If this inspection reveals any unusual findings concerning crankshaft integrity, you will be notified.
The inspection efforts to date complete the Southern California Edison Company's actions in response to the reference. If there are any questions concerning this inspection activity, please contact me.
Sincerely, cc:
A. J. D'Angelo (USNRC Resident Inspector, Unit 1)
