UNIT 1 THERMAL SHIELD FASTENER EVALUATION AT THE BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORY (TAC No. M75107)
As part of the NRC evaluation of the 1990 San Onofre Unit 1 thermal shield repair, samples of locking fasteners, of the type used to attach the thermal shield inside the reactor, were sent to the Brookhaven National Laboratory for testing. The test subjected the fasteners to a simulated reactor environment to determine if the fasteners were susceptible to stress corrosion cracking.
The enclosed Brookhaven report, "Corrosion Testing of Thermal Shield Support System -
San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station" dated December 1991, concludes that (1) the locking devices did not show evidence of corrosion cracking, and (2) the locking devices retained their original torque values during the test program. This letter documents completion of work designated by TAC No.
M75107.
