Docket Nos. 50-361 and 50-362 San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Units 2 and 3 In accordance with the September 9, 1980 telephone reauest made by Mr. Barry Zalcman of the NRC staff, please find enclosed one (1) magnetic tape of hourly meteorological data from San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).

The enclosed tape (#8436) contains the meteorological data in NRC format for the period January 1, 1976 through December 31, 1979 from the Bluff Meteorological Tower.

The tape is a standard labeled, 9-track, 1600 bpi magnetic tape written in EBCDIC with the following four files:

File 1 - 1976 SONGS data (NRC Format)

File 2 -

1977 SONGS data (NRC Format)

File 3 - 1978 SONGS data (NRC Format)

File 4 - 1979 SONGS data (NRC Format)

Each logical record is 160 characters in length and written with 20 records per block. provides the requested NRC format for meteorological data. provided the SONGS format (consistent with the requested NRC format) for meteorological data contained on the enclosed magnetic tape. provides the first few records of each data file for your information.

3) Some of the wind directions were reduced in sectors for the original record. For the NRC format, these sector values have been converted to the center direction of the sector using the following:

YR last two digits of the year of the data The latter columns contain either a T or C which corresponds respectively to the eleven parameters for the given hour. T indicates that the parameter is an hourly average of one minute digital values. C indidates that the parameter is an hourly average reduced from analog strip charts. Chart values are neces sary when digital values are missing or invalid.

  • If the wind direction is a chart value, it is coded as wind sector. A sector Is 22.5 centered 11.25* on each side of 3600. 22.50, 450, 67.50s 90o. etc.

Sector 01 is from 11.25* to 33.75; sectors progress clockwise.

NOTE: All missing or invalid data, except wind direction, are indicated as a series of 9sI (e.g. 99.9 or 999.9). Missing or invalid wind direction data are indicated as 99.0.
