FEB 000 VICE PRESIDENT-POWER SUPPLY June 30, 1980 xCNB 200 Mr. Richard Snaider Generic Issues Branch Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555
Dear Mr. Snaider:
Solicited Comments on NUREG-0577 and Amendment Issued May 19, 1980 The San Diego Gas & Electric Company urges that the comment period proposed for the subject documents be extended from July 7, 1980 to at least September 15, 1980.
SDG&E is a co-owner of the San Onofre Nuclear Generat ing Station Unit 1, potentially impacted by the consequences of the generic study and proposed Commission actions.
The basis of this request stems from the significance of the changes to NUREG-0577 contained in the May 19, 1980 Amendment thereto.
In view of the more stringent requirements and broader applicability proposed in the Amendment, we believe that additional time for comment is appropriate to assure the rigor and completeness of the comments to be provided by the licensees and their con sultants.
Although the Eisenhut letter (Amendment of May 19, 1980) indicates that "the Electric Power Research Institute has been requested to conduct such research," EPRI has made no such commitment, based upon information available to us.
If, indeed, EPRI has initiated research work pertinent to the subject and of interest to the Commission, it would seem appropriate to extend the comment period to permit the early results from such an effort to be introduced into the Commission's deliberations.
Your consideration of the merits of this request is solicited.
Sincerely, D. W.- Gilman DWG:LB:ph cc:
