20545 Docket Number 50-206 San Onofre Unit 1 No. 2 Diesel-Generator
Dear Sir:
This report describes an incident experienced at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 involving the No. 2 diesel generator.
Station administrative controls stipulate the scope and frequency of testing for auxiliary protective equipment and include tests not required by Unit 1 Technical Specifications.
One of these additional tests stipulates that each diesel generator be full load tested semi-annually for a period of one hour.
During the semi-annual capacity testing, conducted August 13, 1974, the Number 2 diesel-generator tripped due to high temperature after 42 minutes running time.
Investigation revealed that the turbo-charger after cooler pump had failed. The pump was removed and disassembled.
Inspection of components revealed damage to the impeller and casing caused by entry of a foreign object.
The pump assembly was replaced and the diesel-generator returned to service.
Subsequent to repair, on August 16, 1974 the Number 2 diesel generator unit was run at its rated load of 600 KW for one hour. The test was completed without incident or any abnormal indication.
In accordance with Technical Specification requirements, the No. 1 diesel-generator remained operable during the period the No. 2 diesel generator was out of service.
CV Sincerely, SEP 14197 R,
