Dear Sir:
This letter describes a reportable occurance rivolving.the Chemical and Volume Control System. Submittal is-in accordance with the reporting requirement stipulated in Section 6.9.2.b(2) of the Technical Secifications.
On April 26, 1977, the north boric acid transfer pump failed to start Corrective action was initiated; a spare pump was installed and placed in service April,27, 1977. During the period that'the north botic acid.transfer pump was out of service, both the boric acid injection purip and the south boric acid transfer pmp were. availabl nd the conditions of Technical Specificaitio

Investigation revealed an.accunulation of boric acid crystals.in the failed pump The pump lagging and heat tracing circuiits wer examined. Operating procedures were reviewed. No specific cause for the failure could be positively determihed. However, to afford greater protection from potential development of isolated cold areasj additional lagigwas added in the vicinity of the pump and-adjacent piping.
