August 17, 1989 Mr. Gregory L. Hulsizer Interim City Manager 100 Avenida Presidio San Clemente, California 92672
Dear Mr. Hulsizer:
In response to your July 10, 1989 letter, we have reviewed the matter of the proposed major airport sites by the Orange County Board of Supervisors. Our review indicates that two of the proposed sites, South Camp Pendleton (site No. 9) and Christianitos Canyon (site no. 21), pose a safety concern in reference to the operating nuclear power plants at the San Onofre site. Specifically, the proximity of these sites to the nuclear power plants, in conjunction with the projected airport capacity for general and commercial aviation, poses a significant risk of an aircraft crash on a nuclear power plant. In view of this, we recommend that these two sites be eliminated from further consideration in the selection process for the proposed airport. A copy of this letter is being sent to interested persons in your area, including the Airport Site Coalition.
Sincerely, original signed by George W. Knighton, Director Project Directorate V Division of Reactor Projects -
