May 20, 1988 Mr. Victor Stello, Jr.
Executive Director for Operations United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555
Dear Mr. Stello:
On January 15, 1988 you wrote Senator Alan Cranston who had written you on December 7, 1987 in my behalf.
I was attempting to determine the status of the installation or non-installation of a reactor vessel level indicator at San Onofre6Unit 1.
In your letter to Senator Cranston you mentioned that SCE was proposing installing a thermocouple in the upper region of the reactor vessel above the core and its guide structure, which thermocouple would provide some indication of conditions in that region during a potential inadequate core cooling condition.
At the time of your letter the NRC staff was reviewing this proposal to determine if it would be an adequate alternative in terms of providing sufficient information on inadequate core cooling.
You stated that "We expect to complete this review in the near future.
You also went on to say that because of my expressed interest in this subject, you would inform me of the results of your decision on this issue.
I have no way of knowing how long the words "the near future" mean so am writing to inquire if a decision has been made.
If so, can you please let me know what it is.
If a decision has still not been made, I would very much appreciate being told its results when one is reached.
Sincerely, (Mrs.)
