AEOD REPORT ON SAN ONOFRE UNIT 1 LOSS OF SALT WATER COOLING EVENT OF MARCH 10, 1980 Enclosed for your information is a copy of the AEOD report covering the March 10, 1980 San Onofre Unit 1 loss of salt water cooling event. This report has been forwarded to NRR, IE, and Region V for appropriate action.
In the forwarding memoranda to these offices, AEOD noted the fact that on May 13, 1982,.San Onofre Unit 1 had two more loss of salt water cooling events.
Since the reactor was in cold shutdown at the time, there was no damage to the plant, and there was no danger to the public. However, as shown in the case study report, had any of the three loss of salt water cooling events occurred while the plant was in the early stages of residual heat removal cooling, there could have been damage to safety-related equipment within a few minutes.
In the near future, AEOD will update the previous Abnormal Occurrence Report (NUREG-0090, Vol. 3, No. 3) with additional information on the May 13, 1982 events.
