-ZV De*-r2ir:

0' I'm a resident of San Diego and I'm writing you in regards to my concern over the location of the San Onofre nuclear power station. It seems to me that this coastal area is a bad choice for such a risky form of energy production. There are three major areas for mishap: 1) this area is known for its frequency of sizeable earthquakes. I feel an earthquake the size of the historical San Francisco quake would surely level such an installation.

2) I feel in the event of any nuclear mishap ( including an earthquake)

San Onofre's location on the ocean causes extreme danger to some of California's natural resources. For instance the local San Onofre state beach and nearby San Clemente beaches would immediatly be closed if there were any sort of nuclear mishap. If in the event there were any radiation leaks into the ocean countless nmbers of prime game fish, commercial food fishes, and many other species of fish native to the area could be contaminated or affected. Many marine mammals could also be affected. Mammals like porpoise, seals, and whales all frequent the water off the coast of San Onofre.-Any local marine creature would be exposed to contination.

3) San Onofre is located too near the population center of San Clemente. Many hmman lives would be endangered if a nuclear leak did occur.

With all the combined risks involved with San Onofre wouldn't it be better to at least attempt to develope an alternative source of power or maybe a new location for existing supplies. An example could be one of California's many low population desert areas.

cont.

In remote little used areas of the desert less human lives would be at stake. The desert would also allow more time for containment before as many natural resources could be affected as quickly as San Onofre and the Pacific Ocean's resources would be. A nuclear power plant constructed in the desert could be pre-planned away from any major fault line.

I do not seek to condone or condemn nuclear power. I'm simply conveying an idea on the location of this particular existing nuclear power supply..'In my opinion this is a very serious concern and should be to the people of California. Thank you.

Sincerly:

Edward K. Johnson 5211 Richards Hall Logan. Utah 84321
