Dear Sir:

/-

It is ridiculous, and frightening, to see how a fe thousand half-baked youngsters can exert enough pressure on our elected representatives to imDede the advent of nuclear power, which we MUST have to free us from dependence on foreign oil.

Although as many as 20,000 of these uninformed and unthinking kids turn out for a "rally"., the truth is that these are really free "Rock conccrts" rather than anti-nuclear rallys.

Has there ever been an "anti nuclear" rally without a rock concert to draw a crowd?

Not that I know of!

The rock music appeals to the same half-baked youngsters that sit and scream "no more nukes".

These youngsters believe in two false premises.

One is that-nuclear power somehow poses a threat to society. Actually it.is probably the safest source of energy we have and the least destructive to the en vironment. Even the waste-disposal "problem" could be easily and quickly solved; it is political, not technical.

Fusion nuclear energy would have no waste materials whatever!

The second illusion these youngsters have is that their pet alternative.

solar energy, is "right around the corner".

Except for pre-heating water, a negligible aspect of our energy needs, solar energy is prohibi tively expensive and probably will be for many years.

It may NEVER be competitive with other sources of electrical energy unless there are major and unpredictable break-throughs in technology.

The "anti-nuke" screamers have no knowledge of the technology involved; they apparently think that some kind of "black-box", placed in the sun, could supply all the energy for a family.

Sorry, it just isn't so!

Fortunately, other countries, including France, West Germany and Japan, are proceeding at top speed to develop safe, inexpensive nuclear power.

Our dissidents will succeed only in putting us in last place.

They can only slow nuclear development.

It is so logical, so necessary and so advantageous that it will surely come.

Why do we let immature, uninformed rock concert fans sabotage our only chance for inexpensive and abundant energy from nuclear sources?

Sinc.e xely, Carl Harden
