. Docket No. 50-362 Permanent Removal of Fuel from the Reactor Vessel San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 3
Reference:
Letter from P. T Dietrich (SCE) to the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) dated June 12, 2013;
Subject:
Certification of Permanent Cessation of Power Operations San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit s 2 and 3
Dear Sir or Madam:
Pursuant to 10 CFR 50.82(a)(1)(i), Southern California Edison (SCE) has certified that it has permanently ceased power operation of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) Unit 2 and 3 (Reference). Pursuant to 10 CFR 50.82(a)(1)(ii), Southern California Edison (SCE) hereby certifies that the fuel has been permanently removed from the Unit 3 reactor on October 5, 2012.
SCE understands that, pursuant to 10 CFR 50.82(a)(2), with these certifications SONGS Unit 3 license no longer authorizes operation of the reactor or emplacement or retention of fuel in the reactor vessel. As a result, we also understand that past and future regulations and generic communications directed solely to licensees authorized to operate a nuclear power reactor are no longer applicable to SONGS Unit 3.
Currently, there is fuel remaining in the Unit 2 reactor vessel. Defueling is currently being planned. Once defueling of Unit 2 is complete, a certification of permanent removal of fuel from Unit 2 will be submitted by separate letter.
There are no new commitments contained in this letter.
