San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Turtle Incidental Take Limit

Reference:

1) NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Biological Opinion for Sea Turtles: September 18, 2006 (Section X, D. 9)

Dear Ms. Wilkin:

In accordance with the reference above, the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) is notifying NMFS of reaching the 50% incidental take level for the Olive Ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea). From 1983 through 2005 there had been no entrainment of the Olive Ridley, but in the past 7 % years there has been two incidental takes. The total estimated entrainment for this species is three turtles.

Currently SONGS is in the process of installing Large Organism Exclusion Devices (LOED) on the primary intake structures. These are currently scheduled for completion in April 201 4.

The LOED is an additional measure that we are taking to minimize the entrainment at the CWS intake structure for all sea turtle species If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (949) 368-7311.
