Dear Carol Gallagher,
Hello. I'm writing sincerely and urgently, asking you NOT to approve the re-licensing of Edison's San Onofre Unit Two.
As you surely know, the dangers of fission nuclear reactors are extreme. This danger is heightened enormously on the coast of our state, due to earthquakes on-shore, and also to earthquakes off-shore with their attendant tsunamis.
A tsunami-caused melt-down at the San Onofre plant, similar to that at Fukushima, Japan, MIGHT destroy large sections of Southern California, Arizona and Northern Mexico. Given this real danger, the entire plant at San Onofre should be decommissioned.
There are plenty of alternative sources of electrical power to that which might come from Unit Two. Any extra costs of acquiring these alternatives can routinely be passed down to consumers. From this standpoint therefore, there is no "cost" argument for restarting Unit Two.
The people will pay all costs, no matter what; and Edison will make plenty of profit, no matter what. The real difference will be in safety and sustainability.
As part of a general shift away from fission nuclear power, and ultimately to decommissioning of the plants at San Onofre and Diablo Canyon, I urge you not to approve the re-licensing of Unit Two.
Also, Carol, I urge you to avoid personal moral responsibility for any future problems at San Onofre, by taking positive action now to turn Edison toward safe, more sustainable electrical power generation.
