Dear Chairperson Macfarlane:
As president of the Doheny State Beach Interpretive Association, I am writing to express my support for the U.S.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission's review of the San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station's (SONGS) applicationto operate. I have studied the issue of SONGS and believe the San Onofre Station should be put back online on the earliest possible date.
I have several concerns with regard to power generation. I advocate for clean energy generation, one that makes the air safe to breathe and protects our health. I expect a reliable, dependable supply of energy, there when we need it: I need affordable energy. The San Onofre Station is important on all three counts.
Nuclear facilities supply thirty-seven percent of California's emission-free power and are the largest clean air power source available. SONGS has helped avoid 180 million metric tons of carbon emissions from being dumped into the
-fragile ecosystem of southern California. San Onofre provides "baseload"generation; available at night and despite the weather, unlike wind or solar generated power. It allows regional utilities to avoid the cost of new plants or greater transmission capacity, costs that would ultimately be passed down to the consumers. Southern California Edison Company has pledged to search through warranties and insurance to recover costs of current outages.
My experience has been that Edison is focused on safety. SONGS has never been closed for emergency safety reasons: Edison has followed the NRC's requirements and informed the NRC of all changes at the plant. The company has goes to extraordinary lengths to inform the public about its actions regarding the Station.
On a nmatter unrelated to the SONGS, I wish to note that Southern California Edison is a remarkable corporate citizen, engaging and supportingthe non-profit world that serves minority, low-income and underserved people, seniors, the disabled and also, important to me, local environmental educational organizations. They have made a difference in these areas, and I am proud to partner with them to help serve my fellow Californians.
San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station is crucial to the economy and living environment of millions of people in.
southern California. Uncertainty in delivering clean, safe and affordable electricity harms our state. Getting the San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station back online will help us all.
Sincerely, William R. Brooks, President, Doheny State Beach Interpretive Association
